The Davidson County Metro Criminal Justice Center offers a mission-driven approach to detention, diversion and treatment in downtown Nashville. The building houses Sheriff’s Office staff and up to 1,000 inmates.

The contemporary design blends the often-competing missions of security and treatment. The materiality and massing relate to the surrounding historic civic buildings and courthouse while creating a forward-thinking, modern environment.

The civic plaza and gardens demonstrate Nashville’s commitment to community and downtown development. The plaza, designed to be harmonious in composition and materiality to the adjacent civic spaces, connects the new facility to the courthouse and City Hall and act as a new public gathering place within the civic district.

The overall design of the plaza is meant to be an adaptive use space that is welcoming for passersby, a shaded area of respite for works, and a secluded contemplative garden for families. The civic space also reinforces Nashville’s commitment to sustainability by incorporating green roof systems, stormwater mitigation and photovoltaic renewable energy systems.
